Original Article: Shepherdsville Council To Again Vote On Sunday Sales

An ordinance that would legalize Sunday alcohol sales at Shepherdsville restaurants will be introduced in the city council meeting Monday.

The legislation comes after Shepherdsville residents voted nearly 75 percent in favor of expanding liquor sales. The vote was nonbinding, and council member Bonnie Enlow says the turnout wasn’t high enough to convince her to support Sunday sales.

“Such a small amount of people showed up to vote—like, three percent of our registered voters. And that just shows me there’s not much interest in the subject,” she says.

Enlow also opposes the measure on religious grounds.

“You’ve pushed God out of the schools. You’ve pushed Him out of the court system. Pushed Him out of everywhere. Somewhere along, you’ve got to stand up and say enough is enough,” she says.

Proponents say it will help area restaurants. Enlow says hers is one of two definite votes against the measure. She says there are three likely votes in favor, and one undecided. In the case of a tie, the mayor would cast the deciding vote. The mayor voted against a similar measure last year.

Original Article: Shepherdsville Sunday Sales Vote This Week

Shepherdsville residents will have a chance this week to vote on Sunday alcohol sales at restaurants. But the vote itself won’t change any laws.

The vote will be held Thursday and Friday. It’s a non-binding referendum meant only to gauge public opinion on Sunday sales. The actual approval would have to come from a city council vote.

Council member Bonnie Enlow says there are three council members in favor of Sunday sales. One member is opposed and two, including her, are undecided.

Enlow says public support may change her mind, but she has twice voted against similar measures.

“One: because it is God’s day,” she says. “Two: it because has to do with endangering the lives of others with alcohol.”

Advocates say Sunday sales will improve business at restaurants. The measure would not allow sales at package liquor stores on Sunday.

Original Article: Kentucky Harvest Donation Program To Expand

A program that gave a portion of alcohol sales to Kentucky Harvest is being renewed and expanded.

For part of this year, Pernod-Ricard and Southern Wine and Spirits distributors gave a portion of money from vodka sales to Kentucky Harvest, which was able to buy meals for families in need across the commonwealth.

Brent Wunder helped organize the program. He says it will continue on a larger scale next year.

“The program ran from April through June, but we’re going to bring it back from April to June in Kentucky, and we’re also going to expand it to Florida, New York, Delaware, South Carolina, Illinois,” he says.

360 thousand meals were donated across Kentucky this year as part of the program, 175 thousand of which went to families in Louisville.
